The work that I chose out of the collection of works by Golan Levin is a video performance. In this performance, two people stand opposite one another on a stage. It is very hard to make out any faces because only the shadows of the bodies of the two people are shown. A light is cast upon these two people with a red-orange coloring that is shown the whole time. The light almost looks like two spotlights being used but instead of coming at the people from the front the light is coming from the back of them creating a shadow figure of the two of them.
It appears that the two people are talking to one another but they are only making sounds, no actual words that I know of are spoken between them. The person on the right is noticeably taller than the other person. It seems as if the person on the right is a woman by the voice and size but it is not definite because her face is never shown. The whole time the people are on stage there is a ray of light that comes out of the two people in almost a snake-like manner. When the people make sounds the color changes to more of a white color then fades into a green color and back to a reddish and even a little purplish color. It appears as if the rays of light that come from them are from a screen that is in back of them, which is really interesting to watch because it must be perfectly choreographed and the sounds must change the light colors at the same time. It looks easy to do but the more I think about it I realize how coordinated everything has to be if they are all separate things going on at once.
Another interesting part of the performance is that while the people talk they sway back and forth and get closer then farther from one another. They never get too close but the rays of light that come out of them do get close to the other person. It is very interesting to watch the light that comes out of them because it swirls around and goes in different directions. They both seem to be talking in whispers and they never raise their voices too loud, but when the sound rises the white light seems to become more intense. The way they talk also seems like it is in slow motion. They talk very slow and it sounds like the way talking sounds when it is put in slow motion on movies and things of that nature. Overall it was a very interesting and different piece of art than I had ever seen before.
